BUILDING 113
Episode 1 Foundation
THE ORIGIN 40 Years Before
The night was warm and the bourbon was doing its job, not putting anything out, just turning the volume down low enough that he could stand himself.
Ike had come from Denny's bar two blocks back, cutting through on Arbor because it was faster and he wasn't in a hurry to get anywhere in particular. He was twenty something years past a jungle he'd been trying not to think about for years and he was mostly succeeding, nights like this one, when the air was warm and nobody needed anything from him.
He heard the woman first. Not a scream. Something worse. A sound that was trying not to be a scream. Controlled terror. He knew that sound. He'd heard it in places he didn't let himself visit anymore.
He stopped walking.
Three of them. An alley mouth off Arbor, lit just enough by the streetlamp on the corner. Two of them had a young man backed against the wall, mid twenties maybe, college type, jacket and glasses, and the third had hold of the older woman's arm. She was the one making the sound. Small woman. Someone's mother, clearly. The kind of woman who was still trying to be dignified while being very afraid.
Ike stood there for one second. One. Then he was moving.
He didn't announce himself. He didn't say hey or stop or anything else that gave a man time to adjust. He hit the one holding the woman first, open hand across the ear, hard enough to ring his bell, and the man went sideways and let go. The other two spun toward the noise. The young man in the glasses slid down the wall and Ike stepped into the space in front of him without thinking about it, the way a door closes.
The next sixty seconds weren't clean. He took a fist to the jaw that he felt in his back teeth. He put a man on the ground and kept him there. The third one read the math quickly and made a decision Ike didn't have to enforce.
Then it was quiet.
He stood breathing. His knuckles ached. The taste of copper was somewhere in his mouth. The woman was crying into her hands and the young man had gotten to his feet and had his arm around her, glasses cracked on one side, saying it's okay Mama it's okay Mama over and over.
Ike looked at them for a moment.
You hurt he asked.
The young man shook his head. Then looked at Ike fully, the way people did when they were trying to memorize something.
No. We're..., thank you. Thank you. Who are—,
But Ike was already walking. He pulled his collar up and turned back toward Arbor, and the streetlamp threw his shadow long behind him as he went.
He didn't know the young man's name. Didn't ask.
It was thirty years before he sat down in a VA examination room and a doctor looked at his chart, then looked at his face, and said very quietly, I know you.
THE RIDE
Tina pulled out of the parking lot and her hand found his knee for a moment before returning to the wheel. She didn't say anything. That was one of the things he loved about her. She knew the difference between a silence that needed filling and one that needed company.
I'm okay he said, before she could ask.
I didn't say anything.
You were about to.
He heard the small breath of a smile in her exhale. She merged onto the street and the world outside the window became sound, the rush of passing cars, a dog barking twice then stopping, the low groan of a city bus accelerating away from a stop.
Thompson really didn't tell you anything else Tina asked. Her voice was even, careful. He knew that careful. She was managing something. Worry maybe. Or hope. She'd learned not to hand him either one prematurely.
He told me enough.
Which was.
Go.
She let that sit for a moment.
Go is not a lot Ike.
From Thompson, go is plenty. He pressed his head back against the headrest and turned his face toward the window. The sun moved across the left side of his face as they turned south. He tracked it. He always tracked it. Habit from when he first started losing the Vision in his right eye, fixing himself in space by whatever warmth he could still feel. He said they need to meet me specifically. Not a veteran. Not someone with vision loss. Me.
Tina didn't answer right away. He appreciated that she was thinking about it instead of just reassuring him.
That mean something to you she finally asked.
It means he's not sending me to a waiting room. He paused. Thompson never once sent me anywhere he didn't already know the answer to. You know that.
I know she said softly. I know that.
A stoplight. The car idled and he listened, the tick of the engine, a radio from somewhere behind them. He felt her looking at him. He didn't turn. He let her look. She'd been looking at him a long time, through things that would've sent other people in the other direction. He wasn't going to waste energy pretending this wasn't strange and uncertain and alive with something he couldn't name yet.
Nervous she asked.
Excited he said.
Both.
He almost smiled. Drive Tina.
She drove. And for the last stretch neither of them said anything, which was its own kind of conversation, the kind that only works between people who have already said the hard things and survived them.
When the car slowed and she said softly, we're here. He was already sitting forward. Already listening.
BUILDING 113,
The Arrival.
He heard it before he felt it.
The car had barely stopped when something changed in the air, a low almost imperceptible hum, like a building breathing. Not mechanical. Not HVAC or generators. Something more settled than that. The kind of quiet that comes from a place that was built with intention.
“Ike”. Tina touched his arm. “We're here”.
He nodded and reached for the door. She didn't rush around to help him and he appreciated that. They'd had that conversation early on. He knew where the ground was. He knew how to find the edge of a seat and stand from it and take a step. What he needed from her wasn't hands. It was just her being there.
He stepped out onto pavement that felt different than most VA parking lots, smoother, maintained. No buckled asphalt, no gravel patches, no crumbling curb. His cane swept once, twice. Clear path ahead.
Steps he asked.
Gentle ramp to the left she said. Then double doors. Automatic.
He moved toward them and the doors opened before he reached them, not the aggressive pneumatic lurch of a hospital entrance, but a smooth unhurried slide. And then the inside of Building 113 met him all at once.
Cool air. Not the recycled kind. Actual cool, with just enough circulation to suggest real airflow, windows open somewhere. The floor beneath his feet shifted from outdoor pavement to a surface that gave ever so slightly, some kind of engineered composite that cushioned the step. He noticed it immediately. A floor designed for people who needed to feel where they were going.
The smell was clean without being clinical. No antiseptic bite. Something faintly cedar adjacent, warm, deliberate. Someone had thought about what this place smelled like.
They stepped through the doors together, Tina close beside him the way she always was. The automatic doors opened with a smooth, unhurried slide, and the cool air of Building 113 met them both at once.
A voice greeted them immediately.
“Good afternoon. Welcome to Building 113.”
He turned toward it. The front desk. He’d registered it on the way in, he registered everything on the way in, but now without the noise of the outside world, the voice had room to exist on its own terms. Warm. Not the practiced warmth of someone doing a job, but the real kind, the kind that comes from a person who genuinely finds other people interesting.
“Donna,” he said, recognizing something in her tone before he even knew why.
“That’s right,” she replied, pleased he’d placed her so quickly. “It’s good to have you here.”
He nodded once, then shifted slightly so Donna could see Tina beside him.
“This is Tina,” he said. “She’s with me. We are one!”
Tina gave a small smile, the kind that carried more meaning than words. Donna returned it with an ease that made the building feel less like a facility and more like a place meant for people.
“Well,” Donna said gently, “you’re both in the right place.”
She stepped out from behind the desk just enough to gesture toward the interior hallway.
“Let me bring you to Felicia. She’ll take it from here.”
There was no rush in her movement, no clinical efficiency. Just a natural steadiness, the kind that made the entrance feel like a threshold rather than a checkpoint. She walked with them a few steps, then called softly toward a nearby doorway.
“Felicia? They’re here.”
Felicia appeared almost instantly, her voice measured and warm. “Mr. Bridges. Ms. Tina. Welcome.”
Donna gave a small, satisfied nod — her part done, the welcome delivered — and returned to her desk with the same gentle steadiness she’d greeted them with.
Felicia stepped forward.
“If you’re ready, I’d like to begin your orientation.”
I'd like to take you both on a brief orientation of the facility she said. But first let's take your vitals. After taking Ike's vitals, she recorded them and said, your vitals look good. Ike looked at Tina and jokingly said, “well baby I'm still here”. Tina replied, “Yes you are. You're still here”.
They moved through what he could piece together was a wide corridor. His voice when he answered her questions came back at him with a ceiling height above standard construction. The floor continued its precise forgiving give. Somewhere ahead he heard another veteran, an older man, navigating with a white cane, tapping a measured rhythm, and someone beside him saying, good, yes, now angle fifteen degrees right, in the patient specific tone of expert instruction.
This was real work . He could hear it.
The tour took twenty minutes. Felicia described each space before they entered it, the orientation and mobility training corridor, the adaptive technology lab, the low vision therapy suite where residents with remaining partial sight worked through specialized exercises. She described a kitchen where veterans learned to cook independently, a workshop where a man was apparently rebuilding a transistor radio by feel alone. There was a gym. There was a common room with deep chairs and a radio playing something easy in the corner.
Every detail precise. Every surface considered. Nothing here was afterthought.
First class Ike thought. Thompson hadn't oversold it.
But then they passed a hallway.
Felicia didn't stop. Didn't slow. Didn't mention it. They moved past it at the same easy pace she'd used for everything else on the tour, and she was already describing the dining facility ahead when Ike turned his head slightly toward the corridor they'd passed.
No sound from it. Not the room tone hum he'd been picking up from every other space in the building. Just nothing. A pocket of stillness that was different in character from ordinary quiet. Like a space that had been built not to let anything out.
He filed it. Didn't ask. Didn't pause. Kept walking. But he filed it.
When the tour was over and they were seated in a bright warm intake room, Tina on a chair beside him, a cup of coffee in his hands that was significantly better than anything he'd had at any VA facility in forty years, Felicia set a folder down on the table between them.
Your program will begin Monday she said. Mobility, adaptive tech, low vision therapy to show you how to use your remaining vision in your left eye to the best of your ability and beyond. We have a world class staff Mr Bridges. You're in good hands here.
I can already tell he said, and meant it.
She smiled. He could hear it. Dr Thompson said you were observant.
I get by.
One more thing she said. During your first week we do a series of what we call baseline assessments. Sensory calibration. Response mapping. Standard protocol for all new residents. Nothing uncomfortable. Just comprehensive.
He wrapped both hands around the coffee cup.
Sensory calibration. Response mapping.
He'd been in enough rooms to know when language was doing more than one job at once.
Sure he said. Whatever you need.
Outside the intake room window, which Tina later told him faced a long manicured lawn, the afternoon light was doing something unusual through the glass. She mentioned it offhand on the way out, the way you'd mention any small strange thing.
There was this shimmer she said. Like heat off asphalt but it wasn't hot.
Ike nodded slowly. He'd felt it too.
THE GOODBYE
Tina walked him back to the lobby and they stood near the doors for a moment not saying much. The automatic doors had closed behind them after the intake and now the building hummed quietly around them, that low intentional frequency he'd noticed on arrival, still there, still doing whatever it was doing.
You good she asked.
Yeah.
I'll call tonight.
I know you will.
She put both hands on his face then, just for a second, the way she sometimes did, like she was reading something. He let her. Then she kissed him once, pulled her coat straight, and he heard her heels cross the composite floor toward the doors, which opened and let in a breath of outside air, and then closed again.
He stood there for a moment in the lobby quiet. Somewhere to his right, unhurried, a pen moved across paper.
DONNA
You don't have to stand Mr Bridges.
He turned toward the voice. The front desk. He'd registered it on the way in, he registered everything on the way in, but now without Felicia's tour narration filling the space, the voice had room to exist on its own terms. Warm. Not the practiced warmth of someone doing a job, but the real kind, the kind that comes from a person who genuinely finds other people interesting.
Donna he said.
That's right she replied. You want to sit. There's a chair right in front of you about four steps. I moved it this morning. It was at a bad angle.
He walked to it and sat. The chair was good, solid, not the plasticky waiting room kind.
You eaten she asked.
Had coffee.
That's not eating.
No he agreed. It's not.
He heard her open something, a drawer, the soft resistance of wood, and then the quiet tear of a wrapper. A moment later a granola bar appeared in the space near his right hand, placed there without making a thing of it.
He took it.
They sat for a while. She didn't interrogate him and she didn't fill silence with noise. She asked him once where he was from originally, and he told her, and she said she had people from near there and he asked where, and they talked about that for a while the way people do when geography is the pretext and the real subject is something else, the fact of being human mostly, and not being alone in it.
At some point he realized he'd eaten the granola bar without noticing.
You're going to do fine here she said eventually.
It wasn't reassurance. It wasn't the kind of thing people said because it was expected. It landed like information, steady, declarative, offered without agenda.
He nodded. I know he said. And for the first time since Tina had pulled out of that parking lot headed for Building 113, he actually did.
THE CORRIDOR
He found it again at twenty two hundred.
They'd set him up in a room on the east wing, quiet, functional, nothing institutional about it, a window that had a view of the courtyard and let in the sound of wind in trees outside. He'd lain on the bed for an hour listening to the building settle. His room was across the hall from the dining room. That was convenient. The hum was still there at this hour, lower now, like the building had shifted into a different register after dark.
He got up.
He knew the layout from the tour. Twenty minutes of Felicia's precise descriptions had given him a workable map, the dining hall south, the adaptive tech lab north, the mobility corridor running parallel to the main hall. And off the main hall, roughly seventy steps from the lobby end, the turning he hadn't been invited to take.
He moved slowly. Not cautiously, he wasn't cautious by nature, but deliberately, the way you move when you're listening more than walking. His cane swept a clean arc ahead of him. The floor gave its familiar measured give. He counted doors, counted steps, tracked the changing acoustics as spaces opened and closed on either side.
Sixty eight steps. Seventy.
He stopped.
It was there. The same pocket of stillness he'd noticed that morning, but at night it had a different weight to it. During the tour it had felt like absence, a space that wasn't making noise. Now, standing alone at the mouth of the corridor with no voices and no footsteps and no one describing anything to him, he could tell the difference between a room that was empty and a room that was quiet on purpose.
This was the second thing.
He stood at the entrance and did not go in. He just listened.
And then, not a sound. Not a vibration he could name. More like the air at the corridor's mouth changed pressure by some fraction of a degree. As if the space beyond had exhaled. As if it had registered that he was standing there and had done the one thing a room should not be able to do.
It had noticed him back.
His hand was still on his cane. His breathing was even. He was seventy four years old and most of what he'd seen in his life had prepared him poorly for whatever this was and reasonably well for what to do about it.
He didn't move. He waited.
After a long moment he turned and walked back to his room and lay down on the bed and stared at a ceiling he couldn't see and listened to the wind in the trees and the hum of the building around him, different now, or maybe he was hearing it differently, until sometime well past midnight, without meaning to, he slept.
